Marcia Brake, Associate IIDA
I am a Colorado native, I have lived in Fort Collins for 20 years now. It has become my home town and is a great place to raise my sons. After Graduating from Colorado State University I worked in healthcare design, I love the detail and creating environments that are part of the healing process for people. For the past four years I have been running my own company. I consult mostly with architects, this has given me chance to meet lots of great people and to work on a larger variety of commercial projects. I also have found a passion for teaching and currently an adjunct factuality at Front Range Community College. It is a real motivator to stay on top of the changes in our field when you will have students ask you questions. I am all over the place, I get a lot of “I don’t know how you do it.” I enjoy it so much I don’t know if I can go back to one thing.
I needed community. When the chance came to help create a city center in Northern Colorado I jumped on the opportunity. Keeping connected to other professionals has been very rewarding and I enjoy being with others that have the same passions.
When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be an architect. When I decided to stay in Fort Collins (for a Boy) I ask an advisor what would be closest, I ended up in civil engineering. I took a lot of music and art classes in high school so I was a bit behind in math and physics. I took a semester just to catch up and started to look around. I learned CSU had one of the best Interior Design programs so I took an intro class. I knew right away that was where I belonged, it had more of the architecture I always wanted and brought in elements like color that I had learned from art.
What is your favorite design element?
I am a big details person, especially in transitions of materials. I think this where you can really see how thought out a space is. I get very excited to see something new or unique.
Do you have a current obsession?
Cooking. My Pinterest board is crazy. I seem to always be wanting to make something. With two small boys I take a lot of pride in giving them healthy interesting food. They might not agree with that now, one day they will. I love making stuff from scratch, knowing exactly what is in it and making it the way I like.
Which super power would you like to have?
Having two boys I know a lot about super powers. Even though I’m not a runner, I think I’d like to be able to run super-fast like Dash in the Incredibles. I mostly use it to travel to see places and people.
What are you looking forward to this year?
I look forward to seeing another group of students graduate. I also look forward to growing and learning myself. There never seems to be a limit of new things that interest me. I have a couple of trips coming up, they have a great grounding effect on me. I get to see new interesting things and then come home and appreciate what a great place I live.
