Sara Riso, Industry IIDA
Sara is active with IIDA RMC BESTawards and is current Co-Chair. She has been involved on the committee for 4 years. In 2009 Sara moved from Racine, WI to Denver, Colorado to enhance and develop her design skills. After graduating she established a job with a large architecture and design firm in Denver and decided she didn’t want to leave Colorado. After two years of working in commercial design she made the choice to follow a new path. Sara moved to an architectural representative position for the Mohawk Group in 2013.
Not only has flooring become Sara’s passion but it utilizes her strengths. It allows her to be creative and connect with people in a meaningful way on a daily basis. In Sara’s free time she loves to spend time with her husband trying new restaurants, doing yoga, and planning adventures.
Better question, why not IIDA? IIDA is such a great organization that is committed to designers, students, and industry partners. When I was a design student it provided so many opportunities to network and helped me find my first job. Now it serves as such a wonderful way to meet new people, clients, and lasting friendships. The RMC Chapter does such a great job planning thoughtful and fun events. I am proud to be a part of such a wonderful chapter!
When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I grew up I wanted to be an interior designer. I knew from a young age I wanted to be in an open and creative industry. I love watching how people engage with space. Which almost led me down the path of being an installation artist.
What is your favorite design element?
Transitions! I love thoughtful transition details when it comes to flooring, millwork, ceilings, walls, and the list goes on. It elevates design in such a subtle and sophisticated way.
Do you have a current obsession?
My current work obsession is our new product moving floors. I have gotten to meet and work with Anastasia and Martin and am obsessed with the capabilities of this product. As for my current non-work obsession is our puppy Evie Marie. She’s a king Charles poodle mix and is a full 5lbs of personality. I love her.
Which super power would you like to have?
I would love super strength… carpet tiles are so heavy.
What are you looking forward to this year?
This year I am looking forward to a year filled with more “YES”. I am trying to be more spontaneous and less of a planner. Striking a balance between the chaos and structure is something that will help me grow personally and professionally. I’m looking forward to all the 2016 adventures that YES will bring.
