I am IIDA | Ashley James

Ashley James, Student IIDA

I was born and raised in the small town of Council Bliuffs, IA. After trying my hand at various majors I landed on my true passion, interior design. I graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Interior Design from St. Louis Community College in 2014. I am continuing my educational journey at The Art Institute of Colorado where I intend to obtain a Bachelor Degree in Interior Design. When I do get some free time I enjoy spending it with my husband and our two pups!

Why IIDA?
I love being a part of IIDA because it is filled with kind people that have been a part of amazing projects. Everyone within this organization shares the same ideals and loves design. IIDA RMC allows students the opportunity to connect and engage with industry professionals constantly, creating a brighter future for each individual that is apart of IIDA RMC.

When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
What I wanted to be would vary upon my interests at the time. For instance, I wanted to be a professional basketball player (I’m 5’1″). I loved watching anything that had to do with design and would always rearrange my room. So it is exciting to know that I have always been interested in Interior Design and am following that passion.

What is your favorite design element?
I love modern and minimalist design. I think the sleek palette can create some beautiful moments in design and architecture.

Do you have a current obsession?
Bold designs. Everything from daring architecture to extra large fixtures. I think everything can be bigger and better and I am having a lot of fun playing with this concept in school.

Which super power would you like to have?
Not sure if this is a superpower but the ability to teleport. Europe is a bucket list item for me because of the amazing historical architecture that lives there. So to be able to quickly transport to these inspirational places would be awesome.

What are you looking forward to this year?
This year marks the beginning of my future. I will be graduating in June and I will continue my career journey here in Denver. I am mostly excited about just that, the possibilities of the future after graduation. I am excited to learn and grow as an interior designer. I also am very excited to have more free time to spend with friends and family!

How do you think Interior Designers can Advocate for the profession?
I think interior designers can advocate for the profession by joining organizations that promote this industry such as IIDA RMC, CIDC, ASID and NEWH. By being involved you are staying up to date and in-tuned and therefore can educate others that may have a different ideas about this profession.
